Darnel ryegrass (Lolium temulentum) is a Central European plant which is also called 'fake wheat', since it grows under the same conditions as wheat, even sharing the same crop space. Before the introduction of large-scale pesticide use in
agriculture, ingesting wheat that had been mixed with darnel while harvesting often lead to intoxication and dizziness. Darnel is also said to have been a psychoactive ingredient in many ancient beverages.
