The Leaf Lettuce 'Salad Bowl' is a curled lettuce that forms strongly filled bushes and only begins to close very late. This lettuce is also very decorative with its reddish leaves and can be used as border planting for vegetable beds well.

Leaf lettuce varieties produce no heads. Instead, cocarde lettuce leaves are harvested as needed from the outside inwards while the slather continues growing.
The variety 'Salad Bowl' is also suitable as baby leaf salad for the growth as balcony vegetable.

  • Sowing period: Leaf Lettuce can already be sown in the unheated greenhouse or hotbed from the end of February. Direct sowing is possible as soon as the soil is free from snow, respectively mid-May.
  • Sowing depth: As salad belongs to the light germinators, only cover lightly with sifted earth or simply press the seeds onto the soil well.
  • Ideal germination temperature: +10-16°C, from +22°C, germination gets significantly worse
  • Row spacing: 30 cm
  • Planting distance: 35-40 cm
  • Location: Sunny to half-shady
  • Soil: fresh, permeable and deep, not too nutrient-rich
  • Care: At the beginning, water often so that the leaves become soft. Furthermore, remove weed regularly at small plants and loosen the soil. Salad is a light feeder and needs additional fertilizer.
  • Harvest: Mostly from May to mid-September. While the slather still grows, the outer leaves are harvested.
  • Crop rotation & intercropping: As salad belongs to the asters, after every growth cycle a sowing pause on the same location of 4 years should be adhered to.
Good preceding crops are: Cereal, leek, onions, spinach, and green manure.
Bad preceding crops: Parsley and courgette.
  • Family: Asters (Asteraceae)
